It doesn't get much more surreal than this. A picnic in dangerous Diyala province on the basketball court of a U.S./Iraqi base. It was held after a graduation ceremony for Iraqi army and police. They served Iraqi food (fish and rice) and American food (t-bone steaks and corn on the cob). The Iraqis were hesitant at first about the corn, but liked it once they tasted it.
The Iraqi officer in the red beret (on the left side of the table) is called "The Sheikh". He was an officer in Saddam Hussein's army.
Angel, the dog, arrived early and I saw a soldier slip her a steak. She took off for her own picnic elsewhere.
